Bringing a Tired Lawn Back
Lawn renovation and reseeding in Columbus is for lawns that are not dead but are not right: thin under trees, patchy after a dry August, torn up by dogs or a play set, or full of weeds and bare spots after years of short mowing. Not every lawn needs to be stripped and started over. Often the better path is lawn repair: aerate, overseed, fix the problem spots, and let new grass fill in among the old.
Why Central Ohio lawns thin out
Columbus lawns are cool-season grasses, mostly tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. They grow best in spring and fall and struggle in July and August, when the city averages highs around 85 degrees with muggy air. Clay-rich subsoil on Central Ohio's glacial till plains compacts under foot traffic and mowers, and compacted soil sheds water and starves roots. Older neighborhoods in Upper Arlington, Bexley and Worthington add heavy shade from mature trees. Each of those wears a lawn down a little every year.
Overseeding
Overseeding spreads new seed into an existing lawn to thicken it. It works best with good seed-to-soil contact, so we core aerate first or slit-seed directly into the soil, and we pick a variety that matches the existing grass or improves on it: more tall fescue in sunny, heavy-use areas, shade-tolerant fescues under trees. On bigger areas, or where we want mulch to hold moisture, we hydroseed over the aerated lawn.
Renovation
Once weeds and bare dirt have taken over roughly half of the yard or more, starting over is usually the better spend. That means killing off what is there, leveling low spots, adding topsoil where the surface is thin, and reseeding the whole area. The old turf breaks down in place and the new lawn starts on a better surface.
Timing
Late August through September is the best time to overseed or renovate a Columbus lawn. Soil is still warm, nights are cooler, and new seedlings get two months of good growing before winter, plus a second push the following spring before summer stress. Extension services in neighboring states put the ideal seeding period in the same late-summer stretch. Spring overseeding is possible but competes with crabgrass and has less time to root before summer.
Aftercare
New seed in an existing lawn still needs daily water for the first few weeks. Keep the mower high, put off weed control until you have cut the young grass several times, and keep traffic off the reseeded areas. We leave written instructions with each job.

Lawn Renovation & Reseeding Questions
Which months work best for overseeding a Columbus lawn?
Late August through September. The soil is warm, nights are cooler, and new grass has time to root before winter and again in spring.
Should I aerate before overseeding?
Usually, yes. On compacted Central Ohio clay, aeration opens the soil so seed can reach it and water can soak in.
Can I overseed and use weed killer at the same time?
Most weed controls will harm new seedlings. Treat weeds ahead of seeding, or hold off until the young grass has had several mowings.
How do I know if I need a full renovation?
If weeds and bare soil cover roughly half the yard or more, or the surface is too uneven to mow, a full renovation usually gives a better result than overseeding.
Why does grass keep dying under my trees?
Most lawn grasses need several hours of sun. Fine fescue mixes tolerate more shade, and raising the canopy can help, but some deep shade may do better with mulch or ground cover.
