Lawns on Scioto Valley Ground
Hydroseeding in Circleville takes us about 25 miles south of Columbus to the Pickaway County seat on the Scioto River. The town takes its name from its first layout in 1810, which followed a circular Hopewell earthwork about 1,100 feet across, with the courthouse at the center. Residents later found the round lots awkward, and the town was squared into a regular grid by the mid-1850s.
River valley ground
Circleville sits along the Scioto, and lots near the river sit on lower valley ground while others rise away from it. Low lots should be checked for drainage before seeding. On sloped lots toward the river we use tackified hydromulch, blankets where it gets steep and silt fence below disturbed areas.
Former crop fields
Where new homes go up on former crop fields, the lots usually need compacted subsoil loosened and topsoil added. Wind across open fields can dry bare soil quickly, so hydromulch that holds moisture around the seed helps germination.
Older lots in town
Centuries of rebuilding, including squaring the original circle, mean older town lots can have buried fill and uneven grade. Lawn repair here often starts with light regrading and topsoil before overseeding.
Commercial and roadwork seeding
New commercial sites and road projects need temporary seeding, silt fence and ditch protection. We can stabilize bare ground quickly and come back for permanent seed.
Settled along the river early
Before the town existed, a Lenape village called Maguck stood on the Scioto banks, and the explorer Christopher Gist stayed there for four days in January 1751. People have been choosing this stretch of river for a long time. For a lawn, that river setting means checking which way water leaves the lot before anything is seeded.
