Lawns Along Big Walnut Creek
Hydroseeding in Gahanna follows the creek. The city was founded in 1849 along Big Walnut Creek, and its name comes from a Native American word for three creeks joining into one, which was also an old name for Big Walnut itself. The city seal still reads "Three In One." Many of Gahanna's yards drain toward that creek or its tributaries, so seeding and sediment control go together here.
Creekside slopes
Olde Gahanna and the Creekside area sit right on the water. Yards that slope to the creek need cover that holds through a downpour. We use bonded fiber matrix or a straw erosion control blanket on the steep strip, then a standard hydroseed lawn on the flatter ground above.
Building on reclaimed ground
The former Bedford I Landfill, a 200-acre site, was closed and turned into Central Park of Gahanna by late 2007. Capped and reclaimed sites like that need grass to protect the cap from erosion, and they usually have thin soil over fill. That is the kind of ground where hydroseed with a heavy mulch rate and added topsoil does better than sod.
Redevelopment work
Gahanna runs an active brownfields program with assessments and demolition of abandoned properties. Demolition leaves bare, disturbed lots. We stabilize those with temporary seed, silt fence and inlet protection, then final seed when the site is ready.
Residential lawns
Away from the creek, most Gahanna neighborhoods are typical suburban lots from the last several decades. Lawn renovation, overseeding and repairing areas torn up by drainage work are common jobs.

Gahanna Questions
Our yard slopes down to Big Walnut Creek. Will hydroseed hold?
On the steep part we use bonded fiber matrix or a blanket. The flatter yard above gets normal hydroseed.
Can grass grow over fill or a former dump site?
Yes, with enough topsoil on top. We check depth and add soil before seeding.
Do you seed lots after a house is demolished?
Yes. We can install silt fence, protect inlets and seed the lot temporarily or permanently.
Is hydroseed or sod better near the creek?
On slopes, hydroseed with a blanket often roots deeper and holds better than sod strips that can slide.
