Getting Disturbed Ground to Final Stabilization

Construction and commercial hydroseeding in Columbus covers the big, fast work: subdivision lots and common areas, commercial and industrial pads, retention and detention basins, road shoulders, utility corridors, and the dirt piles that sit for months between phases. Central Ohio has some of the most active construction in the state, from new neighborhoods on the edges of the metro to the Intel and data center work near New Albany. Every one of those sites ends the same way: the ground has to be covered with vegetation before the stormwater permit can close. We are a hydroseeding company that works to the plan your engineer wrote and the dates your superintendent needs.

The permit behind the work

Ohio EPA's Construction Stormwater General Permit, OHC000006, covers construction that disturbs one acre or more anywhere in Ohio. It took effect April 23, 2023 and runs to April 22, 2028. Before filing a Notice of Intent, the owner needs a stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP). For sites in the Big Darby Creek watershed and parts of the Olentangy River watershed, the filing has to be in at least 45 days before construction starts, with the plan attached; elsewhere it is at least 21 days. Big Darby runs through the growth areas west of the city, including Plain City, so this matters for a lot of new development. In unincorporated Franklin County, the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District reviews those plans and inspects sites for compliance.

Temporary and permanent seeding

Most plans call for two kinds of seeding. Temporary seeding goes on areas that will sit idle, like stockpiles, future building pads and phases that will not be touched for a while: a fast-growing cover crop, mulch and tackifier to keep the soil in place. Permanent seeding goes on finished grade, with the seed mix specified for lawns, basins or open ground. We can come back phase by phase as areas are ready, rather than waiting for the whole site.

Why hydroseed on these sites

A hydroseeding rig covers large areas quickly and can reach slopes and basin sides from the truck. The mulch protects bare silty soil from crusting and splash erosion in the first storms, which matters in a place that averages about 41.6 inches of precipitation a year. For steeper banks and channels we step up to bonded hydromulch or erosion control blankets, covered on our erosion control page.

Working with your crews

We coordinate with grading, utility and paving contractors so seed goes down after the last disturbance, not before. We keep a record of areas seeded and dates, which helps with inspections. If silt fence or inlet protection is damaged or needs to come out once the ground is stabilized, we can handle that too.

Pricing large areas

Per-acre pricing depends on the seed mix, mulch rate, fertilizer and lime, access for the truck, and how many mobilizations the schedule needs. Published consumer guides put larger hydroseeding jobs around $2,000 to $4,900 per acre, and a 2023 public bid in Arkansas came in between $2,595 and $3,325 per acre. Your quote is built from your plan.

We read the SWPPP or site plan and the seeding spec.

2. Walk and quote

Areas, access and phases measured; per-acre or per-phase pricing.

3. Schedule with your crews

Seeding lined up after final grade in each area.

4. Seed and mulch

Hydroseed applied at the specified rates, heavier on slopes.

5. Records and follow-up

Construction & Commercial Hydroseeding Questions

Do you work as a subcontractor to site contractors?

Yes. Most of our commercial seeding is for builders, developers and grading contractors. Send the plan and schedule and we will price it.

What do hydroseeding contractors need from us before starting?

The seeding spec or SWPPP, a site map showing areas ready for seed, water access if available, and a contact on site. If there is no water on site, tell us and we will plan for hauled water.

Can you seed in winter for stabilization?

Grass does not germinate in frozen ground, but mulch alone or dormant seeding with mulch can protect soil until spring. Your plan may also call for blankets on steep areas.

How do hydroseeding companies price commercial work?

Usually per acre or per square foot, with the seed mix, mulch rate, fertilizer, lime and number of trips driving the number. Small areas carry a minimum charge.
