Seeding on the Hocking

Hydroseeding in Lancaster takes us southeast of Columbus to a city near the Hocking River, about 33 miles from downtown Columbus. Lancaster is the Fairfield County seat and is still growing: with 40,552 people in 2020 it passed both Warren and Findlay in population. That growth shows up as new housing around the edges and rebuilt lots in town.

Founded where a trail crossed a river

Ebenezer Zane was granted square-mile tracts where his road, Zane's Trace, crossed the Hocking, Muskingum and Scioto rivers. The trace was finished by 1797, and Lancaster grew from the tract on the Hocking. River towns like this tend to have low ground near the water and rising ground away from it, so lot slopes vary more than in the flat northern suburbs.

Slopes call for stronger cover

On sloped yards and road cuts, seed alone washes. We add tackifier to the hydromulch, use straw erosion control blankets on steeper banks and put silt fence below disturbed areas. On long slopes, breaking up the flow with fiber rolls helps the grass establish.

Canal and farm heritage

The Lancaster Lateral Canal opened in 1834 and connected local farms to eastern markets through the Ohio and Erie Canal system. Much of the surrounding land stayed in farms. New homes built on former farm fields often need compaction relief and topsoil before a lawn will thrive.

Older city lots

Neighborhoods near the historic downtown have older lawns and mature trees. Overseeding, regrading low spots and repairing yards after sewer or water line work are common requests.
